The unique Pokémon card that visitors might have obtained after successfully completing a treasure hunt in the museum will no longer be distributed by the Van Gogh Museum. The card led to unpleasant situations of collectors approaching customers at the door.
This was often so intense that the safety of visitors and staff was jeopardized, according to a statement from the museum.
We have made the painful decision to stop selling the unique Pikachu x Van Gogh Museum promotional card inside the museum because of recent occurrences in which a select few people caused an unfavorable situation. The safety of guests and personnel is a top priority for both The Van Gogh Museum and The Pokémon Company International.
Collectors predict that the card, which is only accessible for a short period of time, will gain in value. People charge hundreds of euros for the card on marketplace.
Since the end of September, a number of Pokémon-related events have been going on in celebration of the Van Gogh Museum's 50th anniversary. This includes any Pokémon artwork created by artists. This was inspired by well-known works by Vincent van Gogh. Through the partnership, the Amsterdam museum hopes to showcase Vincent van Gogh's artwork to a new audience.
