How many people do you know? This is the average

You probably know more people than you think. Researchers have worked out exactly how many and have come to an average of 540. These are people you know by name and who knows your name.

Researchers Beate Volker and Rense Corten asked 1,247 Dutch people questions such as: do you know someone with a scooter? And: do you know someone who eats vegan? They were also shown a number of first names and had to indicate whether they knew someone with that name. They combined the answers and applied a mathematical model.

Conclusion: a person knows an average of 540 others. "You could approach that person to have a chat, but it is not necessarily someone you see often," says Beate Volker, professor of sociology and social networks at Utrecht University.

Volker emphasizes that the differences are very large between people. "The difference between a cashier or an IT specialist is immense when it comes to human contact. There are always people who even have more than ten thousand acquaintances. It is a very skewed distribution. We do know that there are more people above that 540 than below."
