This optical illusion keeps the internet in its grip: how many dots do you see?

Every once in a while, an optical illusion pops up again that crosses the entire internet. This time it is white dots against a black background. The question is how many are there and which way they move. Reddit user d023n placed the image online. Since then, the dots keep the mood busy. No one knows whether it is now two or four and whether they are moving from top to bottom or from left to right. Some even see them turning in circles.

The dots move with a frequency of 5 Hertz. You can also have them move with 2 Hertz. Still it is not clear how it is.

Or how about 10 Hertz.

The explanation? It is stroboscopic light. This makes you think the dots are moving but that is not the case. They only go on and off.
