You always find an expiration date on the packaging of frozen products. All kinds of guidelines can also be found online about how long you can store frozen food. You would think that these storage recommendations are focused on food safety, but is that true? The answer is: no, the expiration date only says something about the quality of the product. This will deteriorate as your food stays in the freezer longer. But something that was not spoiled when you invaded it, in fact, always remains edible. The American agriculture ministry USDA writes: "Food that is constantly stored at -18 degrees is always safe to eat. Only the quality deteriorates if you keep food in the freezer for a long time. " The USDA explains: "Frozen food lasts almost forever, because the freezing process slows down the movement of molecules, causing microbes to enter sleep mode. It also prevents the growth of micro-organisms that cause disease and spoilage. " By freezing food, bacteria, yeast and fungi are also inactivated. So you never have to wonder if that stray bowl can still be eaten in the back of the freezer.
