Women the weak sex? Not quite. If major disasters hit the world, there are more women who survive than men. This is shown by a new study from the University of Southern Denmark. The researchers studied the death rates after a number of serious famines and epidemics in the past three hundred years, such as the great famine in Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century, the measles epidemic in Iceland in 1842 and 1882 and the famine under Stalin in 1933 in Ukraine. Regardless of their age, women were found to live longer than men in periods of calamity. Regardless of their age, women were found to live longer than men in periods of calamity. "That women live longer is even noticeable when they are just a baby. If you look at the mortality rates of babies over the years, girls survive difficult circumstances much more often than boys, "says one of the researchers.
