Our body has internal scales

Swedish scientists have discovered that the human body has an internal scale. "As body weight increases, a signal is sent to the brain to eat less," explains Professor John-Olov Jansson of the Sahlgrenska Academy. "This keeps the body weight constant." The researchers used obese rodents. The researchers hung weights on the animals, making them even heavier. Striking: the period afterwards, the animals lost as much body weight as they did artificially. Because of the extra weight, blood sugar levels improved and the amount of body fat decreased. It is the first time in 23 years that a new mechanism has been found to regulate body fat. In the nineties the hormone leptin was discovered by American scientists. The mice lost up to forty percent of their weight shortly after administering the peptide hormone leptin. In humans, administering leptin is less effective as a means to lose weight. The new mechanism that the Swedish researchers have found has nothing to do with the amount of leptin in the blood. "By combining this mechanism and leptin, an effective treatment of obesity may develop," says Professor Claes Ohlsson of the Sahlgrenska Academy. Who is overweight does well to move. Ohlsson: "When someone with overweight often sits, the body thinks the body weight is too low. The result is that this person is going to eat more.
