Newest trend: raw water
A new phenomenon in health freaks is drinking 'raw' water, according to the New York Times. In San Francisco, lovers of pure, unfiltered water are willing to pay around 37 dollars (over 30 euros) for a jug of 3.78 liters. But health experts are not enthusiastic about the new hype and warn about the dangers. It is as if the clock is being turned back. Some water drinkers worry about the quality of the tap water and fear the additives such as fluoride. According to their theory, important healthy minerals disappear from the water that you would need when filtering. According to them, bottled water is also not safe because it is treated with ultraviolet light or ozone to prevent the spread of algae, but that would kill healthy probiotics in the water. Dr. Donald Hensrud, director of the Healthy Living Program at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, foresees acute dangers when massively raw water is drunk. Without the treatment of water, there are acute and eventual chronic dangers. Viruses, bacteria such as E. coli, parasites and carcinogens can spread through untreated water. "Almost everything you can think of that can make you ill can be found in water," food safety expert Bill Marler from Seattle tells Business Insider. "Since filtered, treated water has become the norm, most people do not realize how dangerous 'raw' water can be, says Marler. "The diseases to which our great-grandparents died have been completely forgotten." Most Westerners in their area do not know anyone who died from hepatitis A or cholera thanks to the advancement of science, technology and strict health regulations. That makes it more difficult to realize what risks are associated with the consumption of raw water. "
