Let chewing gum be the new trend.

Antisocial bubbles-blowing young people, chewing gum under chairs and tables and unappetizing smacking sounds: these are all logical reasons why schools ban gum. And adults who chew gum are easily seen as indifferent people. Chewing gum has been given a negative image over time. Too bad, because chewing gum can be very useful!

About ten years ago, various universities, including England and Japan, have been investigating the effects of chewing gum on the brain. The results are convincing: they all show a positive effect on memory and concentration. For me, this was no news. Not only because I had heard this story long ago, but also because I know it from experience. Also during the writing of this article I chew bubble gum and I occasionally blow a big bubble. But now it is allowed. I sit here alone and will not stick the chewing gum under my own desk. And believe me: it really helps me concentration.

Today, while chewing, I suddenly wondered why it is so that chewing gum helps for concentration. The answer is fortunately not too complicated. A frequently heard explanation is that it is because there is sugar in chewing gum, which gives you energy. Nonsense, because most chewing gum is sugar free. Moreover, you can just as well pour a scoop of sugar in (of course without chewing, otherwise your teeth will stick to it). No, the explanation is not in the chewing gum, but in the chewing. When you chew, your jaw muscles start to work. They need energy, especially in the form of glucose and oxygen. That's why extra blood goes to your head. As a result, extra glucose and oxygen will also enter your brain. Which allows your brain to work extra well. But chewing gum does even more. In one way or another, chewing gum also causes your stress to decrease. How that works exactly is not yet clear, but a fact is that it works like this.

Chewing gum is good, and should be encouraged in schools. As a primary school in Germany did in 2010: do not prohibit students, but encourage them to chew gum. And for those who are convinced: there is also a study that shows that the normal chewing gum works less well than chewing gum with an extra flavor. So choose your favorite taste and chew. Let chewing gum be the new trend. Because anyone who wants to be smart, has to chew gum!
