China has built the world's largest air freshener. And it works

China has built an air purification tower of 100 meters high. It would be the largest in the world. The device purifies ten million cubic meters of air per day and it seems to work. The tower is located in the North China city of Xian and has a positive effect on the air quality in the region, according to the South China Morning Post. Research leader Cao Junji says in the newspaper: "The tower has no equal in size and the results are encouraging." Since its launch last year, the giant device emits 10 million cubic meters of clean air every day. On days when the air quality reaches a critical level, the tower brings it back to a moderate level. On average, the amount of particulate matter (PM 2.5) decreased by 15 percent on days when the pollution was severe. This is more common in the winter when the city is heavily dependent on coal. Air quality has been measured over the last few months in an area of ten square kilometers around the treatment plant. The system draws dirty air to the greenhouses at the bottom of the tower and heats them up with solar energy. The hot air then rises through different layers of air filters. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), China is the deadliest country in the world when it comes to air pollution. Worldwide, dirty air would be responsible for one in nine deaths each year. And that will only get worse.
