Women with breast implants are more at risk of a rare form of lymphoma in the breast than women without implant. This type of lymphoma is called large cell anaplastic T-cell lymphoma (ALCL). Research by VUmc, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, Maastricht UMC + and Medisch Spectrum Twente was published on Thursday in the journal JAMA Oncology, Journal of the American Medical Association. With the help of a database, in which all records of pathology studies in the Netherlands have been stored since 1990, the researchers mapped out all patients in whom ALCL was diagnosed in the breast between 1990 and 2016. The researchers found 43 women with this form of lymphoma, of whom 32 had a breast implant. Comparison of these results with a control group indicated that women with an implant have a much higher risk of this form of lymphoma than women without breast prostheses.
