A whale rescued a diver from a large tiger shark by carrying her under his fin and returning it to her boat. Scientists have never seen anything like this in the animal world. Biologist Nan Hauser was snorkeling off the coast of Rarotonga on the Cook Islands when she was suddenly taken away by a giant whale. The 63-year-old woman had not yet seen the 4.5-meter tiger shark that had swim near her. The whale does. He pushed her away from the life-threatening animal with his muzzle and fin. A second whale also tried to keep the shark away from her by striking his tail. Hauser has been studying whales for over thirty years, but has never experienced anything like it. She did know of the intuitive tendency of whales to protect other animals, including humans. Yet she was afraid at first when the whale started to push her. "I did not know what he was up to and he stayed with me for ten minutes. It seemed like hours. " But at the end when she was safely back in her boat, the relief prevailed. "I love you," she called her rescuer in need.
