The zoo in the Danish city, Aalborg had two brown bears put to a euthanasia, because they had become too old. The animals were healthy, but with their 20 and 21 years they were no longer usable for the breeding program.
Bears of that age have little demand at other zoos and therefore it was not logical to try to find a different park for them, the Aalborg Zoo wrote in a message on Facebook.
On the page of the zoo hundreds of indignant reactions came with texts like: "No one should visit the zoo ever", "The leadership of Aalborg Zoo does not respect living beings" and "You are the biggest bastards I have ever seen in my life".
The zoo says that the best intension for the animals. "Sending a infertile set to another zoo would take the space of other, genetically important and fertile animals. Now they contribute to the research and the brown bear gets what he is entitled to. The bodies of the two bears are made available to science at home and abroad. For example, researchers use the body for research into hibernation; for example, how it is possible that the blood of bears does not solidify, as happens in people in the cold. The skins and skulls are donated to education.
