Strange object from space appears indeed very strange

In October there was an uproar about an unknown, needle-shaped object from another galaxy that passed Earth at a gigantic speed. Now scientists know something more about Oumuamua, as the rock is called. It is probably surrounded with an organic layer, which protects the icy inside. It could explain why "Oumuamua did not show the activity we would expect from an interstellar object when he came near our Sun in early September", that's what Nature Astronomy sounds like.

Normally there are mainly comets flying through space, which because they consist largely of ice, get a 'tail' when approaching the sun. This is because the ice evaporates and entrains dust. But Oumuamua did not have that tail when he passed the sun. That would be because the object has a mantle of half a meter thick, so that the ice was preserved.

This layer would have arisen because the object is exposed to large amounts of cosmic radiation, which happens when it has been raging through space for a long time at great speed. The structure of the ice has changed as a result of which an insulating jacket has formed. It is the first time that scientists have discovered a rock from another galaxy. It had probably moved through space for hundreds of millions of years. Oumuamua is red, has the shape of a cigar and is about 400 meters long. The object, especially because of its shape, has revived the theories about extraterrestrial life. But until now, there are no signs that the thing comes from aliens.

For the second time in history, scientists are transmitting communications to extraterrestrials.

NASA scientists hope to communicate with extraterrestrials. They've drafted a message that they want to launch into space soon. That message is more than a simple 'hi, how are you?' The goal is to give the aliens as much knowledge about our civilization as possible. "The message incorporates basic mathematical and physical ideas to construct a universal means of communication, followed by information regarding the biochemical makeup of life on Earth," said Jonathan Jiang, the primary author.
