Scientists have discovered a black hole from the early years of the universe. The signals took over 13 billion years to reach us. It is the oldest black hole that has ever been discovered. When the signals started their journey, the universe was only 690 million years old.

It is a so-called super heavy black hole, which is 800 million times as heavy as our sun Most black holes in our corner of the universe are at most a few dozen times as heavy as the sun. The researchers are surprised that the black hole could become so incredibly heavy, while the universe was only so young. They have no good explanation for it. "It is obvious that in the early universe there was a process that made this monster," they say.

The black hole has been given the scientific name J1342 + 0928. The discovery is Wednesday in the important science magazine Nature. Among the principal investigators is the Dutchman Bram Venemans.

A black hole occurs when a star explodes at the end of its life and the remains then implode.          Gravity in a black hole is so great that nothing can escape, even light. Everything that comes around is swallowed up and torn apart. Just before that happens, those fabrics emit an enormous amount of light. That is called a quasar. The light around the discovered black hole is 40 trillion times as bright as our sun.
