Scientists have discovered in Mongolia the remains of a dinosaur that resembled a goose. The 70-million-year-old reptile was about the same length as modern goose and had a long neck and a beak. The animal probably lived partly in the water and partly on the land. This is reported by an international team of researchers in the scientific journal Nature.
The fossil of the goose-like dinosaur was excavated years ago in the Gobi desert in Mongolia. However, the remains of the animal have long been in the possession of a private collector. The animal has now been described for the first time by scientists and has been given the name Halszkaraptor escuilliei. "The remarkable thing is that the animal looks rather strange.
This reptile does not resemble any other dinosaur we know ", explains lead researcher Vincent Fernandez in the British newspaper The Guardian. According to the scientists, the fossil is also special, because few dinosaurs are known who lived both on land and in the water. the goose-like dinosaur was moving forward in the water by paddling with its front legs, which had a webbed type. The reptile also probably hunted other water animals.
The animal had a kind of beak in which many nerves came together. Crocodiles have a similar organ that allows them to track down their prey underwater with a single drop of blood. The 'dinosaur goose' could probably easily grab other water animals thanks to their long neck. Eating their prey was no problem either. They had a row of sharp teeth in their beak.
