A warning campaign and a ban on the party drug 4-fluoramphetamine (4-FA), also known as 4-FMP and xtc-light, have paid off. About 30 percent of the young people who used the drug say they stopped. Another 29 percent have adjusted their use to smaller doses, the Trimbos Institute and the Bonger Institute conclude in a joint study.
A small group continues to use 4-FA i despite being banned, warnings and health problems. Many users prefer 4-FA than ecstasy because the drug causes less loss of control, the effects are less visible and the dip is less strong. The euphoric feeling and the stimulating effect are also important reasons for use.
However, most users (80 percent) also experience negative effects. The most common complaints are sleeping problems, headaches and a dip in the days after use. Also palpitations, dizziness and hallucinations occur. 4-FA has been on the list of hard drugs since May of this year. Before that, the party drug was easily available in the nightlife. Drugs Information Center Jellinek reported earlier this year that the use of 4FA in the Netherlands was fatal to two people.
