Men's contraceptive gel tested by couples next year

Four hundred couples from the United States, Italy, Chile, Kenya, the United Kingdom and Sweden will test a contraceptive gel used by men. The test will start in April, reports the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. During the test period, the male participants must spread half a teaspoon of the gel, consisting of the hormone progestin and a synthetic variant of the hormone testosterone, on their upper arm and shoulder.
In earlier studies, the gel proved to be successful in counteracting sperm production, without reducing the testosterone levels of the male. Also, there are no side effects, such as lower libido, acne and weight gain. During the research period, it is recorded how many sperm cells are in the male semen. When this number drops below the million, other contraceptives can be stopped (such as the pill and the condom). The couple will then use the gel as the only contraceptive for a year. Currently, condoms and sterilization are the only forms of contraception for men.
