Except for the misery on the road, the heavy snowfall of the past few days there also time for creativity. In the Heistraat in Wilrijk Belgium, the resident Raed Alobedi (42) and his comrade Saden (29) modeled an impressive 'snow woman'. The art of modeling is not strange to Raed Alobedi. He is an Iraqi artist who specialized in making contemporary ceramic sculptures according to the ancient Babylonian tradition. In Iraq, Raed taught ceramics at the university. Seven years ago he came to Antwerp because he had no longer work in his homeland. He regularly exhibits in the city and worked for a while in the Middelheim Museum.
When the snow fell from the sky, Raed decided that he wanted to give his creativity a try. Together with his comrade Saden El Boucharb, he planned the plan to model a gigantic 'snow woman' in the Heistraat in Wilrijk, Belgium. "First we tried to collect as much snow as possible", says Saden. I got the best snow from the roofs of the parked cars. Pretty cold, because I did not have gloves. Raed stood on the ladder and in the meantime gave the snow a woman shape. Why did we choose a woman? Women are more beautiful to look at than men. "
After seven long hours of hard work, the sculpture was ready. And the result was there: a three-meter-high graceful woman, with curly hair. "I am quite satisfied with the end result," says Raed. Saden and I worked on it from 8:00 pm until 3:00 am. The sculpture of Raed and Saden elicited a lot of enthusiastic reactions in the neighborhood of the Heistrata in Wilrijk Belgium. "A lot of people came to see to see us working," Raed says. "We were encouraged and people took photos.
The lesser news: the Heistraat will probably not be able to enjoy its 'snow woman'. "Temperatures have been positive all day long," says Raed. "I expect the snow woman by tomorrow afternoon, will be melted.
