Hundreds of Japanese attacked by carnivorous bacteria

Streptococcus pyogenes

This year a record number of Japanese people were besieged by the Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS), a disease that develops after infection with Streptococcus pyogenes, a 'carnivorous bacterium'. You always get very sick of it and one in three infected people dies.  Those who become infected become very ill almost immediately. And death can occur after a number of hours. In 2013 there were only 200 infections. That number increases every year. And probably only in Japan. Japanese researchers do not understand why the number of infected people is rising so fast. The fatalities are often patients who already had poor health, such as the elderly. But there are also healthy young people who are dead in one or a few days.
