Help, my penis has been stolen

It is one of the strangest psychological conditions that you will find in the medical encyclopaedia: koro. People (usually men) who suffer from this, think that their genitals have disappeared or have been greatly smaller. The condition is often a result of mass hysteria: if one man thinks that his penis has disappeared, other men often thinks that also. According to two American anthropologists, Koro is back in Africa after a long period of absence. They report in the magazine Pacific Standard about a case of mass hysteria in the Central African Republic, where a man claimed that his penis was stolen by a traveling tea merchant. When a crowd formed around the two men, there was soon another man who felt that his genitals disappeared.

This story fits exactly in earlier outbreaks of koro. Usually a man accidentally collides with another person and then feels his masculinity disappear, as if a pickpocket had taken his penis.  The solution in Africa, reports the two anthropologists, is to tie the penis with a piece of string and quickly find a medicine man. he can break the spell and protect the man in question from other thieves.

The term koro comes from the Indonesian-Indonesian language area and means 'Shrinking' or - mad enough - 'dredging'. The last outbreak in Europe was in Russia in 1880.
