A French doctor in Brittany has been on the payroll of a hospital for thirty years, without doing any work. The man was at home and every month his salary was paid. The doctor has earned around 130,000 euros a year in recent years. Because the man did not work and therefore did not care for patients, there was also a loss of income for the hospital of 980,000 euros per year. "Between 2012 and 2016, the costs amounted to 5.5 million euros," says the Court of the Brittany region, which brought the case to light.
The doctor in question was head of department at the hospital in Quimperlé. He was appointed there in 1984. "But there were complaints from different angles," writes the Court. The doctor would have behaved "incompetently" with respect to patients and "inappropriate" towards colleagues. "He had behavioral problems that did not fit his job."
An employee of the hospital called the doctor in question 'dangerous'. "He drew insane diagnoses and wrote idiotic recipes." The 'ghost doctor' - as he is already mentioned in the French press - was suspended after two years but not fired. He was allowed to stay home and still got pay. That happened to keep his hand above the head and not to discredit the hospital. "This involved an illegal situation that was at odds with the general interest and was bad for the hospital's finances," the Court suggests. A year ago the doctor was 65 and there was nothing to do but - in the end - to retire. The last gross monthly salary that was still credited to his bank account was 7400 euros.
