Finally really proven: the oldest child is the smartest

It had been a while since there was a slight difference in IQ between the oldest child in a family and his brothers and sisters. Scientists have now demonstrated this once and for all: the oldest is indeed just a little smarter. Only he does not owe it to himself, but to his parents.

New research shows that older children are more successful in the intellectual field. That is measurable at a young age. Toddlers, who are the oldest at home, score better on cognitive tests than middle or youngest children. Other differences in character did not appear to exist, except that older children have a little more confidence, especially at an academic level. It is the parents themselves that cause that difference. They stimulate the oldest child more than their younger brothers and sisters. With the first child they want to do everything as well as possible so they read more stories, spend more time learning the alphabet or doing educational games. Mothers also drink more often during second and third pregnancies, they only go to medical check-ups later and breast-feed less often. But the learning aspect was by far the most important. Researcher Jee-Yeon K. Lehmann therefore states that the efforts of parents in the first years of life really have an effect. "All learning activities that you enthusiastically do with your child have a positive and long-lasting effect on their development."
