Chinese woman almost blind by dozens of mites in eyelashes

A 62-year-old woman from the Chinese province of Hubei has almost become blind because she has not washed her pillowcase for five years. The mites in the heavily soiled textiles were massively nestled in her eyelashes. Research in the hospital has shown that there are even dozens of parasites in the hair follicles of her eyelashes.

The Chinese website Oriental Daily reported the incident after which British media such as The Sun and Daily Mail reported two weeks ago. The woman had been suffering from red and watery eyes for about two years. Xu (only her first name was released.) Bought eye drops at the drugstore to ease the discomfort and gradually became accustomed to the difficult situation. Until the problem of Ms. Xu recently deteriorated so much that she could not get her painful eyes open any more. In the end she decided to consult an ophthalmologist.

In the hospital, specialists found that the patient's eyes were full with about a hundred microscopic mites. The doctors suspected that the problem had to do with a lack of personal hygiene, but after questioning the patient they had to swallow. It turned out that the woman had been sleeping on the same pillowcase for about five years without having washed it once.

The diagnosis that was made: blepharitis and conjunctivitis. Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids, especially of the eyelid edge where the eyelashes are implanted. Conjunctivitis or conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva that coats the outside of the eye-white and the inside of the eyelids. After treatment, Xu was able to leave Wuhan hospital again. From now on she will receive accompaniment that will help her keep her house and body a little cleaner.  According to the doctors who treated the woman, it had only one haircut or Xu was definitively blind because of the severe inflammation caused by mites. How the specialists have removed the mites is not known.

Mites are found in beds and in other places in a house that is not cleaned properly. Most mites, with their size of less than 0.1 to 1.0 mm, are not or barely not visible to the naked eye, although some species are somewhat larger and reach a size of a few millimeters. The well-known house dust mite measures approximately 0.2 mm. What kind of mites the Chinese woman had in her eyes is unclear. It is certain that the mites - there are 45,000 different species - were in the eyelashes and had eggs laid in the attachment.
