China opens the world's most beautiful library. There is, however, one problem

Recently the images of a new library in China went viral. Quite rightly, the library in the Binhai Cultural District in Tianjin appears straight from a science-fiction movie. From the floor to the roof, shelves filled with books, accessible by ingeniously constructed stairs. In the middle is a white sphere to give the whole an extra futuristic touch. The library is no less than 33,700 square meters. There would be room for 1.2 million books. From a distance it seems like there are actually so many books, but who zooms in sees that they are just pictures of books and that there are only a few copies here and there. In total the library would now contain 200,000 books, but wandering along the big white bookshelves is not there. The real books are somewhere else, in normal spaces. The director of the library, Liu Xiufeng, says it is due to the design of the building. "We can only use the hall for certain approved purposes, so we can not place books there." Another design flaw is that the upper bookshelves would be accessible through other rooms, but due to construction problems this did not work out. It remains a very impressive building that attracts 15,000 visitors every weekend.
