Blijdorp welcomes rare black rhino

For the first time in almost sixty years a black rhino was born in the Rotterdam Zoo Blijdorp. Rhino mother Naima gave birth on Saturday after a pregnancy of more than fifteen months, reports the zoo. Only once before, in 1960, a black rhino was born in the Netherlands: Laura who later moved to a zoo in Dublin. This black rhino was also born in the zoo Blijdorp.

After the death of Laura's father, there were no more black rhinos in the Rotterdam zoo for fifty years. That changed in 2013 due to the arrival of the young animals Naima and Vungu in the new thick-skinned wing of the Rivièrahal. They were joined by the somewhat older Wanda, but offspring were waiting. Black rhinos are seriously threatened in the wild. The horns of the animals are popular with poachers, for example as a status symbol, but also because the crushed horn is processed in, for example, medicine in Asia that has never been proven to work.
