A man who dressed as an SS man escaped from Auschwitz

From the German extermination camp Auschwitz, 196 prisoners have escaped. The way in which the late Polish Kazimierz Piechowski (98) died in Gdansk, was unique and made him famous. He stole uniforms, weapons and a car from the SS with two fellow pilots and drove the camp while saluting.
Piechowski had been brought to the concentration camp at that time, in June 1940, as a political prisoner. After his daring piece, the Germans did not get him anymore.
He became a member of the underground Polish army and fought against the Nazis. After the war, the former Auschwitz prisoner was arrested by the communist authorities. They also put him behind the bars for ten years.
In total, 928 prisoners have attempted to escape from the Nazi death camp. . The majority were shot during the flight or arrested and shot. Of 254 prisoners it is not clear whether they were arrested or killed again after their escape.
