Male dolphins seduce females with gifts

Some male dolphins in Australia try to seduce females with gifts, according to a new study. The bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) dive sponges and then bring them to female dolphins. Probably they hope to persuade the females with these gifts to mate with them.
The researchers at the University of Western Australia report this in the scientific journal Scientific Reports. The scientists observed the remarkable behavior in different populations of tumblers living on the west coast of Australia. For example, they filmed a dolphin that, with great difficulty, pried a sponge animal from the seabed. The tumbler then let the sponge balance on his beak and presented the gift to a female. According to principal investigator Simon Allen, the male with this behavior tried to show the female that he would be a good and strong sexual partner.
"We were perplexed when we saw what the tumbler did," explains Allen on the news site of the University of Western Australia. The scientists also saw the remarkable mating behavior later in other dolphin populations. "The proof speaks for itself," says Allen. "These dolphins, perhaps the most socially complex animals on our planet, donate sponges to each other."
Sometimes the dolphins even work together to get a sponge and later present it as a gift to a female. The question is why they do that. Only one of the animals can successfully breed couples and offspring with the female. "These findings are totally new", according to researcher Stephanie King. "We still have a lot to investigate in the future."
