A Chilean tourist was nine days lost in the Amazon says that a group of monkeys helped him survive because they left food behind him and led him to shelter and water. Maykool Coroseo Acuña, 25, camped in the Madidi National Park in Bolivia Tuichi near the river when he strayed from the camp and got lost. Acuña disappeared one night in February from his cabin without leaving a trace.
Acuña was part of a group of tourists who had booked a tour through Max Adventures. The owner of this tour, Feizar Nava said he would not participate in the Pachamama - or Mother Nature - ceremony. She says those who do not respect Pachamama by Duende, an evil spirit, can be possessed. Park Director Uzquiano said: "We believe Duende is real. And we think it is possible that Maykool was taken by Duende. " Because locals thought Acuña was in "another dimension" different ceremonies were held to contact him.
Nine days after his disappearance rangers heard screams from a lakeside less than a kilometer from the camp. Acuña, who was severely stabbed and beaten, said he could only survive by following a group of monkeys. He said they dropped food and brought him every day for shelter and water.
To National Geographic, he said: "I had sandals on but I left it behind because they would slow me down. Later, I threw away my phone and flashlight. After I had walked far as I paused beneath a tree and I was wondering what I did. I wanted to return but that was not possible. " Acuña said that he had prayed to God the night before his salvation to be saved. He also said he does not believe in shamans of the Bolivian jungles, but it was God who saved him.
