Plants are not crazy: they know it when you eat them

Plants are not as stupid as you think. They know they are eaten. And they do not like it. Scientists from the University of Missouri studied Arabidopsis (thale cress), a plant that is widely used in biology research, and is closely related to cabbage and broccoli.

They took the sound of the vibrations that a caterpillar makes as he eats the leaves of the plant with the hypothesis that plants in some way, feel or hear the vibrations. The plant made remarkably light poisonous mustard oil when he was eaten and sent the terrible stuff to all its leaves so the predators shake off.
The plant produced extra mustard oil as the 'eat vibrations' remarked but not natural vibrations, for example caused by the wind. Researcher Heidi Appel explains: "We have already proven that plants can sense sounds, but this is the first study that shows that plants respond differently to vibrations that occur when they are eaten."
