On earth can be found 60 025 different species of trees. The region with the most different trees is Brazil. There grow 8,715 varieties. The northernmost of North America has the smallest number of species: fourteen hundred. That reported an international team of researchers in the scientific journal Journal of Sustainable Forestry.
The scientists compared lists of tree species drawn up over hundreds of years in different countries. They used data from the organization Botanic Gardens Conservation International, which has five hundred departments worldwide. A surprising result of the study is that prevents 58 percent of all tree species counted in only one country. These species are therefore very vulnerable. In total three hundred tree species are directly endangered. These trees are less than fifty copies counted in the wild. There are the kind Karomia gigas only find six individuals in a remote area in Tanzania. Also the pine widdringtonia whytei is almost extinct. There are only a few copies in Malawi found that the tree has been adopted as a national symbol.
The global study of tree species is a major breakthrough according to lead researcher Paul Smith. The lists of species from different regions were never previously merged. "Digitizing and combination of these data is the result of centuries work," Smith said on BBC News. "Now we know exactly which countries still preventing the threatened tree species, we can better assess where we must take action to protect trees. "
