Hitler phone delivers a quarter million dollars

A red phone that Adolf Hitler gave orders in the last years of World War II and kept contact with the army command has changed from owner for $ 243,000. An anonymous buyer purchased the bakelite device at an auction in the United States. The originally black phone is painted red, though the paint is peeling off after more than seventy years. On the back of the device are name of Hitler, a swastika and an engraved eagle.

The device is called it deadliest weapon of World War II. The phone has not been on Hitler's desk. He had the phone always with him on trips and at his headquarters in eastern Poland, The Wolfsschanze. In his last days, he used it in the Fuehrer bunker in Berlin. Russian soldiers found the phone there in May 1945, just days after Hitler had committed suicide. Eventually a British officer took the device home. His 82-year-old son managed to auction it.
