Young dogs react very enthusiastic as they are addressed by high-pitched women, says a new study. If puppies hear a recording of a women who greet them in baby language, they run to the speaker and start to bark. When they hear voices of a women talking in a normal voice, they are hardly interested. That report French researchers in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
The scientists showed to their wives experiment audio messages for dogs by confronting them with pictures of the animals. The majority test subjects automatically started talking in baby language to the animals (high tone and a singsong melody), regardless of the age of the dog in the picture. When they asked the women to record a message for a fictitious person. This time, all the women spoke in a normal voice.
The audio clips were eventually played in a room where ten young dogs and ten adult dogs were kept. The puppies were found to react much more enthusiastic than their adult fellows as they were addressed in baby language. The adult dogs showed in both types of audio messages little interest.
Head researcher Nicolas Matevon think that the puppies take the baby language as an invitation to play. "It immediately attracted their attention," he explains in a news Science Now.
Previous research has shown that human babies learn faster when their parents talk baby talk to them. Matevon suspects that puppies learn faster commands as their owners speak at high pitch.
