Scientists in China have discovered the skeleton of the largest otter in history. It is an animal that lived more 6.2 million years ago and was about the size of a wolf. The otter-like weighed about fifty kilograms and had typical round teeth, like the later otters, report researchers at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in the scientific Journal of Systematic Paleontology.
The scientists came to their findings by studying an unusually complete skeleton that was unearthed in the Chinese province of Yunnan. It concerns include the skull, jaw and some teeth of prehistoric otter. The researchers took a 3D digital model of the skeleton using the computer. "The bones are very fragile, so we could not make physical reconstruction," said lead researcher Denise Su on the news site of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
Using the computer model, the scientists were able to estimate the size of the animal flawlessly. "The prehistoric otter was significantly larger than any modern species," said Su. The giant otter probably lived in a swampy area and fed on mollusks, according to the vegetation found at the excavation site. However, research on the skeleton has not ended. The scientists hope to find answers to some questions about the prehistoric otter. "Why was this sort so big? Was the great body of this animal not interfere with walking on land? But above all: how the otter benefited from its size? All those things we still need to figure out, "said Su.
