About 386 cats who have been tested positive on the virus in a animal shelters in the city. The virus was discovered for the first time in November at the cat Mimi. Since then certainly infected one veterinarian.
Veterinarians in a warehouse in Queens, set up a quarantine area. Employees in the building must wear special suits and masks to prevent the spread of the virus. The cats have been placed in cages.
According to the New York City Health Department it is the first time that domestic cats have been infected with the virus (H7N2), which often occurs in birds. The virus was discovered in an animal shelter in Manhattan, and later the virus appeared in the city boroughs Queens and Brooklyn.
It is still unclear how the virus can spread so quickly. The Health Department advises people who get cats from the shelter to be alert. The risk of the virus to human health is low and the symptoms in humans are generally mild. This involves sneezing and coughing, watery eyes and a runny nose.
