Scientists have discovered a hundred million years old fossil of an unknown prehistoric insect with an alien appearance. It is an animal with a triangular head, bulging eyes and an elongated body that fits not in any known order of insects. The body of the mysterious insect is perfectly preserved in a piece of amber. That report American researchers in the scientific journal Cretaceaous Research.
The insect fossil is found in the forests of Myanmar. Probably the animal hundred million years ago become buried during a forest fire under molten resin from a coniferous trees, which dripped down. This resin is eventually hardened to a kind of capsule from amber, allowing the insect body not or hardly affected.
The wingless creature lived according to the researchers on the bark of trees and fed him self probably with worms and fungi. The bizarre appearance of the extinct insect has no agreements with existing species. "I had never seen anything like it," declares research leader George Poinar to news site Phys.org. "This animal is unique, after a long discussion we have even put the insect in a new order in the insect world."
