Rats show joy with their ears'
When rats experience a pleasurable experience, their ears will hang some more. Their earcups get a pinkish color. If rats laughing they probably using their ears.
Scientists examined the appearance of happiness in rats by the animals first to tickle and then bombard them with unpleasant sounds, the Swiss researchers report in the journal PLOS One.
The response of the animals by these positive and negative experiences were accurately mapped. It soon became apparent that especially the ears of the animals show changes when the animals feel happy.
The rats probably hang their ears while tickling because they were very relaxed. According to researchers, the color of their ears changes possible through improved blood circulation as a result of the "laughing".
Lead researcher Luca Menotti hope the findings will ensure that people better recognize the emotions of rats, reports National Geographic News. This should lead to better treatment of the rats that live in captivity, such as in scientific laboratories.
