Number of cheetahs decreases rapidly

There are only 7,100 cheetahs worldwide over, according to a study by Zoological Society of London (ZSL) in collaboration with among others the Wildlife Conservation Society.
In Zimbabwe, for example, according to ZSL the number of cheetahs in the last sixteen years, 85 percent dropped from 1,200 to 170.
The organization says the situation has been ignored for too long because the animal is difficult to follow for researchers. ZSL wants the animal is added to the list of animals threatened with extinction.
"We discovered that the enormous habitat that needs Cheetah, combined with some other threats where wildlife are facing, makes the species closer to extinction than previously thought," says researcher Sarah Durant.
According to the study cheetahs vulnerable to hazards as a decrease in the number of prey because of increased hunting, loss of habitat and illegal trade in wildlife. In addition, more than three quarters of all cheetahs outside protected wildlife parks life and that they are vulnerable because they cover a large area.
