"Monkeys are physically fit to talk '
Monkeys are physically able to speak understandable. If their brains were suitable for it, they could probably talk. Their voice channel is useful in any case to make enough different sounds.
This is the conclusion of an international science team include the Free University of Brussels (VUB). The researchers do not claim a monkey conversation would sound just as in humans. Despite many attempts, never managed to talk chimpanzees or other apes.
Long is believed that, that comes through anatomical limitations of the larynx, tongue and lips. The research team studied the speech organs with X-rays and found that they are more flexible than was thought.
The researchers recorded the organs while the monkey made noises and designed a computer model of the vocal range. That showed according VUB professor Bart De Boer that could produce monkeys simply thousands of different words.
The movie Planet of the apes where talking apes have the power is not even not so far fetched, the university jokes. The findings appear Friday in the online journal Science Advances.
