New mosquito type with double penis found in Australia
A scientist in Australia has discovered a potential new mosquito species with a double penis. The animal can only walk because it has virtually no wings.
The scientist Gunther Theischinger discovered the mosquito by accident when he was doing research in the Kosciuszko National Park, which is about 370 kilometers from Sydney, reports ABC News.
The mosquito appears to be a new species falling under the crane flies. Besides the double penis it is noticeable that the animal has small wings that are not suitable to fly. The bug has hairy legs and is about 1.5 centimeters long.
"We have never had a crane fly found in Australia with very short wings and the sexual organ is very different than the other about one thousand crane flies species that we know," says Theischinger.
He think the short wings are an evolution because the insects barely use their wings in cold, high windy areas and have very much trouble to fly.
The penis may be a compensation for the lack of long wings, says the scientist. "They have the lack of working wings might be a disadvantage to find a good position during reproduction. The double penis may give the male possible extra force to hold a female."
