'Dolphins use language to solve problems'
Dolphins seem to use their own language to solve problems, says a new study.
If the animals are confronted with puzzles that need to work together to get food, they make a striking number of sounds.
This suggests that the animals 'talk' to each other to conduct the cooperation smoothly.
That news reports New Scientist.
Sound recordings that were made during the experiment showed that the two dolphins to solve the puzzle chirped and whistled to each other much more than in normal social interactions.
The animal that solved the puzzle on his own, did not make that noise. Scientists therefore suspect that the sounds of the two were directly related to the cooperation that had to face the animals in the hold of the food.
"We can conclude first that dolphin vocalisations are used to solve a task together," said lead researcher Holli Eskelinen.
The experiment with the dolphins is an exploratory study. It must be repeated on more animals. Only then the researchers can prove definitively that dolphins communicate with language to solve problems.
But other scientists are excited by the preliminary results. "These findings indicate indeed the possibility of the existence of dolphin language," says independent researcher Leigh Torres from Oregon State University.
