GHIMELLS by Melissa Oehlers






At the African Fashion week 2015, I meet designer Melissa Oehlers, I was impressed by her appearance, and would like to interview her, I gave her the days after the African Fashion Week 2015 a mail with questions and she has answered them all, read the interview here below






Tell me about yourself? Bio?
Melissa Oehlers, born in Rotterdam on April 16th 1983.

I am a Dutch fashion designer of Surinamese descent. In 2002, my mother and I established a beauty salon, which I later entirely took over in 2005.
I graduated in 2010 as a hair stylist and Makeup artist from the Mieke Petiet school in Amsterdam. I was also selected for the Master class called “Gruppo select”. My creativity and passion for fashion then kept developing. After the Master class, I was admitted to Academy Artemis where I completed my Fashion training in 2013. Shortly thereafter, I founded my own couture house GHIMELLS.

Why did you decide to become a fashion designer?

As a young girl I knew one thing for sure, "I am going to be my own boss. ‘’ Back then, I believed that my confidence was the key for accomplishing this dream. Starting a business for my own is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.
I've always loved the concept of being my own boss. Many years later, I started my own house of fashion called GHIMELLS. The name GHIMELLS is a combination of my own name, Melissa, and my sisters name, Ghitana. My passion is having fun in the thing that I do best: designing fashion. My specialty is designing Haute Couture.

What is your favorite part about being a fashion designer?

Inventing something new for women to wear. I want to inspire other women to see themselves as the special, unique an beautiful ‘queen’ that they are!

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are designing even more collections, different styles and more different items.
I started designing clothing for women, but from now on it’s also possible to order clothing for girls in different sizes (www.ghimells.com !)
Of course I’m not a fortune-teller but when I daydream and think about the future, I see GHIMELLS as a well-known international brand.
My biggest dream is to design a customized dress for our Queen Máxima. She’s not only the Queen of Holland but also the Queen of style and fashion. It will be an honor to design a dress for her.

African Fashion Week Amsterdam 2015

Last year,  last weekend of August, a new event  started  in the Netherlands: Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam. For three days the Amsterdam World Fashion Centre was dedicated to African culture and fashion. This year's Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam is for the second time, from 28 to 30 of August, this time in the Royal Tropical Institute at the Mauritskade. Three days of African designers the opportunity to show their latest collection of our renowned international audience coming from different continents. For the second time in history, scientists are transmitting communications to extraterrestrials.

NASA scientists hope to communicate with extraterrestrials. They've drafted a message that they want to launch into space soon. That message is more than a simple 'hi, how are you?' The goal is to give the aliens as much knowledge about our civilization as possible.
