UK bans YSL advertising for 'unhealthy skinny' model

London's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned an advertisement Yves Saint Laurent. The reason? An "unhealthy skinny model.

It was a reader of British Elle, in which the photo was circulated, who first pointed out how "irresponsible" it was a photo with such "unhealthy skinny" girl to use as advertising. Then shot the ASA into operation and evaluated the picture. Their message is slightly more nuanced than the evil reader's letter:

"The ASA concluded that the pose of the model and the exposure focus to the chest of the model contracts, where her ribs are clearly visible, and her legs, which seem very thin in contrast to her platform shoes. Therefore, we find that the model looks unhealthy skinny on this picture and we concluded that the ad was indeed irresponsible. "

disagree

The model in question is called Kiki and Willems is an eighteen-year-old Dutch. Yves Saint Laurent gave little reply, except the message "that they do not agree with the complaint that the model was too skinny." Elle UK wished to make no comment.

French law

Recently, the French parliament passed a law allowing modeling agencies that employ models with a BMI under 18 can be fined and even jailed for six months. As Yves Saint Laurent is located in Paris, this story would thus perhaps still be able to get a tail.
